ARTICLE OF INTEREST
Paid Internships Were in Short Supply For 2003 Grads
In a recent survey of colleges and universities that participate in NACE's annual Salary Survey, respondents reported paid internships were in short supply for 2003 grads. More than 64 percent of respondents said their students had a hard time finding paid internships this past year. The down economy was cited as the primary reason. Respondents said that many employers cut back on internships because they couldn't justify bringing in paid interns, while, at the same time, laying off full- time or part-time employees. Many of the internships that had been available in the past had been slashed or converted to unpaid internships, respondents reported. Respondents also noted that many students did not begin their internship search early enough, even though they knew the challenges the economy would present. Some respondents said that those students who started early and worked hard were the ones who were most likely to be successful. Unfortunately, some said they had students who secured internships early on only to find that the internship had fallen through by the time summer arrived.

Unpaid internships were more common for 2003 graduates than they had been in the past few years, according to respondents. Four out of five (80.5 percent) said that their students didn't have a hard time in their quest to land unpaid internships. Most noted that the reason unpaid internships were easier to find was simply because there were more of them.

BCC Note: 85% of the Sauder Internships during the summer of 2003 were salaried positions!

(About the survey: The survey was e-mailed on July 23, 2003, to the 340 schools that make up the Salary Survey participant data base. Responses were received from 127 schools, or 37.4 percent.

WHERE'S HOT (AND WHERE'S NOT) - THE GLOBAL RECRUITMENT MARKET
According to the latest International Recruiters Survey from topmba.com, demand for MBA looks set for a marked recovery in 2004 after several years in the doldrums. According to Nunzio Quacquarelli, editor of the MBA Career Guide and the author of the report, "Looking at projected demand in 2004, all sectors are anticipating a continuing pick-up in demand. The research was conducted in April and May 2003, shortly after the Iraq war, when uncertainty was still prevalent. In our opinion, the pick-up in MBA demand is likely to exceed these forecasts as stock markets strengthen around the world and companies embark on more positive expansion plans." The research also highlighted increases in MBA recruitment outside the traditional key markets of the USA and Western Europe in 2003. Companies in Australia, China, India, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and Russia all reported a surge in opportunities for MBAs.
